Smoothies are a great way to use up fruits and veggies you’ve had laying around that you don’t want to  go to  waste (bananas are notorious for going brown quick and then getting tossed). I love having smoothie ingredients on hand that my family can whip up in minutes and have a nutritious snack or meal on the go. Cherries have been in grocery stores now for a few weeks and they are so delicious this summer! I wanted to create a recipe that had bright, fresh summer flavor, and this smoothie is just that!

First, prepare your fruit by slicing into pieces that will fit into your blender. I use a single serve blender that holds about 3 cups, so I typically cut my bananas into halves and the pineapple into 1 inch chunks. I used fresh fruit for my smoothie, but using frozen store bought fruit is perfect as well! Frozen product is picked and packaged at the peak of freshness and is high in vitamin and mineral content, making it a fantastic option.

I wanted to go the extra step and make it super simple to whip these smoothies up, so I pre-portioned out my pineapple, cherries and banana slices into zip top bags and tossed in the freezer. Now they are ready whenever someone is craving a delicious dessert like smoothie that is nutritious and less than 270 calories!

Along with the fruit, blend together 3-4 ice cubes, 1 cup non fat/ low fat milk, and your choice of No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast (chocolate flavor) or a chocolate protein powder (we love the Unjury brand). I used the first option for this particular smoothie.

And, if you are feeling really festive, why not add a dollop of cool whip and some rainbow sprinkles! Enjoy!

 

 

Banana Split Smoothie

1 SERVING

 

INGREDIENTS

½ medium banana, frozen

½ c. pineapple chunks, frozen

¼ c. cherries, pitted, frozen

1 c. low fat/ non fat milk

¼ c. chocolate flavor Carnation Instant Breakfast- No Sugar Added (or swap out for you favorite chocolate protein powder)

3-4 ice cubes

 

DIRECTIONS

  1. Prepare fruit and freeze in pre-portioned bags for ease.
  2. Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until you have a  smooth and creamy consistency.
